2006 Wingless Sprint Car Rules




  1. CHASSIS
    1. Wheelbase: Minimum of 82”, Maximum of 92”.
    2. Frame: Any Sprint (tube type) or Modified (2x4) frame is acceptable.
    3. Main Cage Structure: Shall be no less than 1 3/8” O.C. x .095”. Chrome molly tubing (1 ½” x .095” is recommended).
    4. The car’s body, motor, driver seat, and fuel tank assembly must be mounted to the chassis centerline.
    5. Sprint car type bumpers and nerf bars are mandatory and must be securely bolted to the chassis, using minimum ¼” bolts.
    6. Bumpers and nerf bars must be constructed of a minimum of:
      1. Chrome Molly Tubing – 1” O.D. x .060”
        OR
      2. Mild Steel Tubing – 1” O.D. x .120”
        OR
      3. Stainless Steel Tubing – 1” O.D. x .083”
    7. Aluminum front bumpers allowed (.120” wall).
    8. Side nerf bars shall not extend out past the outside of the rear tires.
    9. All cars shall have a minimum weight of 1,700 lbs. with the driver at all time.

  2. DRIVE TRAIN
    1. All drive trains must have a driveline or rearend coupler system (to disengage rearend of motor). Torque arm drivelines may not be used. All drivelines must be enclosed and contain no more than one (1) U-Joint, and that must be at the front of the driveline.
    2. Buckley Yokes are acceptable.
    3. A torque tube safety strap or driveline hoop is recommended.
    4. Any conventional quick-change with a maximum 2” axle offset is allowed.
    5. No titanium parts except valves and valve spring retainers shall be allowed.

  3. SUSPENSION
    1. Any conventional torsion bar, coil over, or combination of the two is acceptable.
    2. No independent rear suspension shall be allowed.
    3. Straight front axles only.
    4. No hydraulic or electric devices that can adjust the suspension while a driver is in the car shall be allowed.
    5. Only one (1) shock per wheel shall be allowed.
    6. External adjustable shocks shall be allowed. However, cockpit adjustable shocks shall not be allowed.

  4. WHEELS AND TIRES
    1. Both are optional.
    2. Beadlocks are recommended, and are mandatory on the outside right rear.
    3. At the Twin Cities Speedway ONLY, race participants can only run a maximum wheel size of 10 inches for the front wheels, 14 inches for the left rear wheel and 18 inches for the right rear wheel.

  5. BRAKE SYSTEM
    1. Minimum left front and left rear (inboard) brake system is required.
    2. Steel and aluminum rotors only.
    3. Brake systems must be in proper working order.

  6. BODY
    1. Sprint car type bodies must be installed. May be of fiberglass or metal.
    2. Side panels are mandatory.
    3. Top hoods are mandatory. Hoods must be securely fastened. Hoods must be width of cowl at rear and width of radiator at front.
    4. No ground effect or wing-type bodywork shall be allowed.
    5. Firewall: All cars shall be equipped with a solid metal firewall. Firewall shall be between the engine and the driver. Access holes may be cut for wiring, linkage, etc., but must be kept to a minimum (referee discretion).
    6. Windshield screens are mandatory.
    7. A belly (floor) pan is required and must extend from the firewall to the front of the driver’s seat.

  7. ENGINE
    1. Engines shall be a maximum of 360 cu. in.
    2. Cast iron (OEM) block and cast iron heads shall be mandatory. No aluminum or other exotic metals shall be allowed. Raised runner heads shall not be allowed.
    3. Valve angle must be stock (23 degrees, will allow 21 for Chevy).
    4. Flat tappet cams only. Roller rockers and girdles are OK.
    5. No lifter diameter larger than .875 Chevy.
    6. Gear drive and dry sump oil systems are allowed.
    7. Carburetion:
      1. Any 2bbl. (500 CFM Holly, #4412 or #9647 as recommended).
      2. Throttle body must be stock (1 11/16”).
      3. Venturi may be opened .010 (ten thousandths) over catalog specifications. MUST pass all carburetor tool checks.
    8. Demon carburetors are allowed.
    9. Choketower may be removed.
    10. External jets shall be allowed.
    11. Bottom of carburetor shall be no more than 4” from the top of the manifold. This includes any adapters, spacers, etc.
    12. Ram intakes and open hole hoods shall be allowed.
    13. No titanium or aluminum rods shall be allowed.
    14. No onboard computers shall be allowed except tacs and/or exhaust analyzers.
    15. For the 2006 season, all participants must have an inspection hole in the engine pan.

  8. IGNITION AND STARTING REGULATIONS
    1. Ignitions are optional.
    2. All racecars must be self-starting. Clutches are optional. If a clutch is used, an NHRA-type, 180 degree, scatter shield shall be installed. NO EXCEPTIONS.

  9. FUEL SYSTEMS
    1. Alcohol or gas is allowed.
    2. A securely mounted fuel tank (Sprint car or Midget type) with a bladder shall be required for all cars in competition.
    3. Gas powered cars may use an approved fuel cell.
    4. Size:
      1. Alcohol – 24-gallon minimum, 40 gal maximum.
      2. Gas – 12-gallon minimum, 20 gal maximum.
    5. Fuel tanks shall not be mounted to the chassis using any portion of the access plate or nut plates bonded into the fuel bladder.
    6. It is mandatory that the tank vent shall have a check valve.
    7. No electric fuel pumps shall be allowed.
    8. No oxygenated additives (e.g. Nitro, Nitrous Oxide) shall be allowed.
    9. Fuel lines and fuel filters must be securely mounted to the chassis.
    10. Alcohol is the recommended fuel.

  10. MUFFLERS
    1. All racecars shall be equipped with mufflers that muffle engine noise to 95DBA at 100’ or meet track requirements.

  11. SAFETY REGULATIONS

    COCK-PIT:
    1. Aluminum or steel seats shall be mandatory. The seating system should provide lateral support on both right and left sides.
    2. High-back seats are recommended. High-impact headrests shall be mandatory. Headrest shall be of shock-absorbing material behind the driver’s head, and shall be a minimum of 1” thick.
    3. Seat should be mounted in four (4) places to the chassis with a minimum of 3/8” steel bolts and nuts. Each mounting hole shall have a minimum 2” diameter mounting plate with a .060” minimum thickness.
    4. All cars shall be equipped with adequate seat belts, shoulder harnesses, and crotch straps. It is strongly recommended that a 5-point hook-up with 3” belts be used.

    ROLL CAGE PADDING:
    1. All chassis roll cage tubes and bars close to the driver’s head shall be padded with high-impact, approved roll cage padding.
    2. Kneepads and/or knee guards shall be mandatory in the cockpit area.

    STEERING WHEEL:
    1. Steering wheel shall be the quick-release type.
    2. Steering wheel center shall have a minimum of 1” thick padding.

    UNIFORMS:
    1. Nomex type uniforms, gloves, and shoes shall be mandatory and shall meet SFI3.2A/1 rating.
    2. A minimum of two (2) layers of protective clothing shall be mandatory (suit and underwear).
    3. Head socks and/or helmet skirts are recommended.
    4. Neck collars shall be mandatory.

    HELMETS:
    1. SA 95 or newer helmet shall be required.

    MISCELLANOUS:
    1. Throttle pedal shall have a toe strap and a minimum of three (3) throttle return springs in the system with at least one (1) spring attached to the butterfly shaft.
    2. Battery shall be securely mounted and shall have a protective covering (rubber is recommended) to prevent any acid spills during accidents.

  12. OFFICIAL POLICY STATEMENT:
    1. Any modifications not covered in these rules will not be allowed unless approved by CSRA officials.
    2. Equipment will not be considered ‘legal’ simply because it went through inspection unobserved or because a rule has not been written against it.
    3. Racecars shall be subject to inspection at any time.
    4. CSRA officials reserve the right to judge, decide, and establish what constitutes a legal part or car.
    5. CSRA officials’ decisions are final.
    6. Approval, by a CSRA official, of a vehicle shall mean only that the vehicle is approves for participation in a competitive event and shall not be construed in any way to mean that the inspected vehicle is guaranteed mechanically sound. Be it further declared, that CSRA officials and inspectors shall not be liable, nor shall the Sanctioning Body, for any mechanical failure, nor for any losses, injuries, or death resulting from same.
    7. Any unsportsmanlike conduct by drivers, owners, and/or pit crew shall be grounds for disqualification and/or punitive action by the Sanctioning Body. Drivers are responsible for the conduct and action of their crewmembers.
    8. Absolutely NO alcoholic beverages shall be consumed by drivers or their pit crews prior to or while competing in an event.


2006 Race Rules

  1. All participants must enter the racetrack from the front straightaway entrance and exit from back straightaway exit. Participants will be disqualified for violating this rule.
  2. Participants and/or crewmembers cannot work on racecars on the racetrack during a yellow flag or closed red flag. Cars must be moved into the infield before work can begin. Participants and/or crewmembers can work on racecars on the racetrack during open red flag. The Head Official will rule on an open red flag. Participants will be disqualified for violating this rule.
  3. All participants must self-start at the beginning of each race. Participants can be hand assisted by crewmembers when starting. Participants can be push started after a red or yellow flag. If a participant requires a push start at the beginning of any race due to starter failure they will lose their position in that race and be sent to the back of the field. Participants shall be given one (1) grace event to comply with this rule.
  4. ROUGH DRIVING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. If a participant is cited for rough driving during a race they will be sent to the back of the field. Participants will be disqualified if they do not immediately move to the back of the field after being notified by a track official of the violation. If a participant is cited for rough driving after the completion of a race, the CSRA Board of Directors will determine the penalty.
  5. After leaving the track on a yellow flag, the participant will be given two (2) courtesy laps to return to the track before the green flag is dropped. After returning to the track the participant will restart the race at the back of the field.
  6. If a participant causes a yellow flag they will be sent to the back of the field. If the same participant causes a second yellow flag, they will be given a black flag and must leave the track immediately.
  7. If a participant stops on a yellow flag incident they will be sent to the back of the field. If the same participant stops on a second yellow flag incident they will be given a black flag and must leave the track immediately.
  8. All race starts and restarts will begin at the marker in turn four (4).
  9. After two bad starts the front row will be sent to the back of the field. The pole position sets the start or restart pace.
  10. If a participant does not mud in the track they will start at the back of a heat race.
  11. If a participant does not run their heat race they will start at the back of their main event (a or b main event depending on car count).
  12. All drivers must attend the drivers’ meeting at each race.
  13. Non-CSRA members must agree to pay a $15.00 fee to participate in any CSRA sponsored event. The fee will be deducted from their race payout check.
  14. All race payout will be mailed to the car owner. There will be no race payouts after the racing events.
  15. Any and all complaints concerning the racetrack will be referred to the CSRA President and/or any member of the CSRA Board of Directors. The CSRA President and Board of Directors will be the only interface with the racetrack personnel. A $50.00 fine will be access to any CSRA member who violated this rule. CSRA non-members who violate this rule will not be allowed to participate in any other CSRA sanctioned races.
  16. The CRSA Head Official has the final rule on unsafe conditions. If the Head Official rules that a participant is creating an unsafe condition (oil smoke, brake smoke, flat tire, hot brakes, etc.) for himself or other participants, he will be given a black flag and must leave the track immediately.
  17. Unsportsmanlike conduct by any driver, owner or crewmember shall be grounds for disqualification. Drivers are responsible for the conduct and actions of their crewmembers at all times. If disqualified, the car and driver will be evicted from the race event. In addition, the driver and owner will not be awarded any points or payout for the event. The car and driver will be suspended from participating in the next two (2) CSRA events. It will be at the discretion of the CSRA Board of Directors if further disciplinary action is required.
  18. Any CSRA participant can appeal a CSRA ruling by submitting a written request for an appeals hearing by the CSRA Board of Directors. The appeals request must be sent to the CSRA President within 7 days of the incident or ruling.
  19. A Rookie is any driver who is new to the Wingless Sprint Car Class. All rookies shall display a rookie flag on their roll bar at all times during the event. CSRA will provide their rookie flag. All rookies will start at the back of the field on every race. The CSRA Board of Directors shall determine when a driver is no longer a rookie.
  20. Participants are not allowed to throttle up at anytime during a yellow flag unless directed to do so by a CSRA official. Violation of this rule will be grounds for disqualification from the race event, loss of points and payout for both the driver and the owner.
